The Way We Get By Music These Days

Spare me the Spears, the hip-hop bling, the oscillating cleavage of yet more hoochie mamas, the ‘deeply profound’ 4-note guitar strumming of prettified boys, the faux angst screech of yet another putrescent evanescence. I’m just all tuned out, oh I am. I mean, have you listened to what’s on rotation on radio/MTV/MTV-wannabes play lists lately? It’s enough to make you wish you were hearing impaired.

I miss music that is a little bit of casual poetry, a little bit irreverent rock, a little bit of punkish Brit-pop. I guess it’s the 80s sensibility showing (a.k.a. my age is showing), huh? John Mayer just doesn’t cut it for me, no no no. And that Hoobastank, well can you say Hoobastink? It’s a relief that my mp3 forays of late have led me to a treasure trove of music I didn’t know people were still making.

Give a listen to this one by Spoon, a band I’ve yet to see, but I’m loving listening to already. The lyrics below are roughly transcribed. Since downloading, I’ve about worn out this track; if this were on vinyl (those of you who’ve actually played LPs will understand) instead of iTunes the groove would be all scratched out from overplaying.

What a lovin’ spoonful.

The Way We Get By
Spoons

We get high in back seats of cars
We break into mobile homes
We go to sleep to shake a pill
Never wake up on our own

And that’s the way we get by
Way we get by
And that’s the way we get by
Way we get by

We go out in stormy weather
We rarely practice discern
We make love to some weird sin
We seek out the taciturn

And that’s the way we get by
Way we get by
And that’s the way we get by
Way we get by

We found a new kind of dance in a magazine
Tried it out it’s like nothing you ever seen
You sweet talk like a cop and you know it
You bought a new bag of pot, said ‘let’s make a new start’

And that’s the way to my heart
The way to my heart
That’s the way we get by
Way we get by

We get high in back seats of cars
We put faith in our concerns
Fall in love to time on the street
We believe in the sum of ourselves.

I said that’s the way we get by.
